UED Whetstone Sharpening

Hi UED! Below you'll find the list of supplies you'll need to participate in the kitchen knife sharpening workshop. Aside from the stones, you should have everything you need already in your home.

Required items

  • Kitchen knife to be sharpened

  • Medium and coarse grit whetstones, more info/links below

  • Container large enough to soak stones

  • 1/4 of a clean sponge (or just a wet paper towel for wiping the blade)

  • Clean, dry dishtowel

  • Damp dishtowel or stone holder

  • Sharpie

  • Strop (or a 2.5" x 12" piece of leather or cardboard)

  • 2 quarters or 3 pennies

  • Well lit space to work in

Stones

As a beginner you only need one or two stones— or even better, a combination stone which has different grits on each side.

If you already do a pretty good job of keeping your knives sharp, you only need a medium grit waterstone. The truth is, however, that most people don't and they'll need to start to start on a coarse grit stone before moving onto the medium/fine grits.

Below is a quick guide on what stones I recommend based on your needs:
